Being sued by insurance company

I was at a friends house on Thanksgiving 2005. While I was standing on his front porch, I threw a cigarette butt to the side of the house. Hours later, he called me to tell me the house had caught fire where I threw the cigarette and they had to call the fire department. The police never came and no one else ever discussed it with me. Now his mother's insurance company is sueing me for the damages of $10, 400. I am 20 years old and have no money or other assets. I can't even afford to hire an attorney to help me. I was served with a summons yesterday and have 20 days to answer the complaint. My Dad is also worried that the insurance company might sue him since I have no assets but I was 19 years old at the time. What can they do to me if I cannot pay them? Can they sue my Dad? What should I do?

This is not legal Advice!

What is the evidence here? Hear say? what proof is there it was a cigarette from you? What did the fire dept say was the cause? On what grounds are they sueing you?

All sounds, a bit silly unless i am only seeing half a story.
