I am a Physical Therapist, and I was subcontracted in a Dr office. One of my patients friended me on facebook. A woman in the office brought to the Dr attention that I was friends with this patient on facebook. There was never discussion on patients care or treatment or any other patients care 0r treatmetn discussed. I today was fired for violating HIPPA by being friends with this now discharged from my caseload patient.
I do not believe that I broke HIPPA, please expalin how I did or if I did and if I was wrongfully discharged.

I live in Michigan for state laws.
THank you in advance.,

No, you were not wrongfully terminated as defined by law. A wrongful termination does not mean that you were fired unfairly or for something you didn't do; it means that you were terminated for a reason prohibited by law.

If the doctor believes that your friendship with this woman violates HIPAA, or creates an impression of impropriety, then he may legally terminate you, even if he is mistaken.

It may or may not be unfair. It is not illegal.
