I have work for a company for three years as a hourly labor in the state of NC. The owners have said that they are doing away with hourly employees and going with sub contractors. They said that I can be a sub contractor or turn in my resignation. They said they will not be laying off or firing any one. I feel like this is an attempt to cheat me out of my unemployment benefits. Can they force me to become self employed or quit?

Well, no, they can't force you. But if they think this is a way they can avoid unemployment they are going to be disappointed.

It is unlikely that they can legally make you subcontractors. But even if by some strange coincidence the job structure does qualify, given the choice they are putting before you I will be very surprised if you are turned down for benefits.

Talk to the UI office in your state but I wouldn't be too worried about it.
