I was given a telecommuting position about a year ago so that I could further my education, and I had signed a contract agreeing to this position. Recently my supervisor (who signed the contract) passed away. Immediately following his passing I was told by the new supervisor that I may be fired within the next two months. This is not due to my job performance, in fact the supervisor reiterated what an amazing job I was doing and sung the praises of my performance. Instead I was told that I was being fired so that they could bring someone else in to work at the office. They then went on to tell me that the only way I would be able to keep my job would be for me to drop out of school and move back to the office (which is in an area I cannot afford as they have frozen raises for the past two years and there would be no cost of living wage increase.) The employees at the office would be able to maintain their work load if they weren't busy surfing the net all day and weren't best friends with the supervisor. If I am doing such a great job is it legal for them to fire me like this? Do I have any legal recourse at all?

Unfortunately yes, it's perfectly legal for them to do this....unless your contact specifically addresses the situation.

You may deem it be unfair, but you were done a courtesy. They have you two months notice, that your position could be eliminated. In this day and age, that's much more than many people receive.

Further, you weren't fired, you were notified that you could have a position in the office. You just won't be allowed to work from home.

Think it over, don't say anything that might hurt your stellar reputation. These people like you. They could have told you 15 minutes before the COB on any day, not to come back tomorrow.

You don't have to drop out of school to keep the job. That's what you heard, because you don't want to change. You can work and still go to school. It just won't be the way it was. Life marches on...
