Let me give you some background. I was diagnosed with Lupus when I was fifteen and just recently diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer.
I was diagnosed on Feb. 24th, 2011. In the beginning there were some doctor appointments that would take half the work day but I would go back to the office after appoinment was over. As soon as those appoinments or any future appointments were made I would inform my boss in order for to her to figure out what tasks she wanted completed before those appointments. This would be done before every appointment or procedure.
April 21st was my first chemo treatment and my blood levels were fine but this last treatment on the 12th of May caused my immune system to be extremely compromised to where I had to be hospitalized for a week. I was released on Friday May 27th but had to give myself antibiotics at home which meant my port was accessed. With that being accessed my doctor would not let me go back to work until removed, it was removed on May 31th. But before that was done my doctor informed me that he wanted to remove the existing port, have a new port put in, and my next chemo treatment pushed back. All those appointments were set-up this past Thursday June 2nd. In the employee handbook it states that the employee has to contact the manager everyday if the employee will be out for more then three days. I did follow this procedure to the "t" including giving her very specific medical information explaining why I was still unable to be at work.
Yesterday my employment was terminated due to unable to work the full 40 hours a week. But the reason I have not been able to work those full hours was due to my appointments and procedures. However there were several occasions that I would leave work to go to the appointment then return after the appointment was over. The only time I missed work was when my doctor said I was not allowed to. I have documentation for all the appointments and procedures from my doctors stating the reason for the appointment and if I would be missing work the reason why has been stated. The biggest thing is I'm trying to figure out what my options available to me.
