Trying to Remove My Roommate

My roommate and I are both on the lease. She has violated the lease agreement by bringing an unauthorized pet (a cat) into the apartment without prior approval from property management, as required. The cat has urinated and defecated inside the unit soley in her room. Litter box waste and cat food have also been scattered on the carpet. Additionally, her bathroom has been consistently maintained in an unsanitary condition, raising concerns about hygiene, property damage, and potential pest infestations. She is agreeable to leaving the apartment, and I meet all income and eligibility requirements to remain as the sole leaseholder. Despite this, the landlord has refused to remove her from the lease.

Your story reveals one of the myriad of reasons why the only roommate I'd ever have is my spouse.

Unfortunately the planet is infested with millions of two legged slobs, louts, unsanitary, nasty human beings.

Secondarily, if a person can qualify and afford to obtain a leasehold, why would she/he consider a roommate?

Have you discussed your concerns with the slovenly roomie?

If not, it might help you resolve this dilemma easier/quicker.

That's because you both are jointly and severally liable for the lease and the LL will keep both of you on it until the unit is returned to him in the condition that it was in when you moved in, exclusive of normal wear and tear.

When I had my rentals that's how I handled roommate tenants.

You are 100% responsible for the acts and the costs of your roommate and vice versa.

Bet you didn't realize how dangerous roommate arrangements were when you signed the lease together.

You can let her leave but the LL won't refund any of the deposit. Your roommate will want if from you instead. If you decide to give it to her make sure you get her to sign a document allowing the LL to return the full deposit to you when you move out.

Meantime you get to clean up her mess and restore the unit to its original condition.
