To YOU it may not seem fair but it is not illegal. Where I worked, you could get your paycheck early if you would not be there on payday.

The ages will not change the legal reply either - it is legal. However, depending on the ages, there could be a "moral" question as to whether it is the best arrangement.

You both might want to get lawyers & speak only to the lawyers. If you can't afford a lawyer, when you go to court plead not guilty & ask for a public defender (a PD is a lawyer). You can discuss your options with the lawyer/PD.

Was the agreement you signed getting your job & seniority back between you & the prison or you & the union? Is the prison AND your union now saying you have to earn your years of service back? Have you talked to your union currently?

Getting ins. now will not help you with any accident that has already happened. You will need ins. for the future though - discuss with a car ins. agent.
