    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

I didn't pay attention to it when I was a kid, but when I was in high school (early 1970's) and we were starting to get licenses and cars I remember it being between 40 & 50 cents a gallon. Of course, to put it in perspective, I think minimum wage at the time was just a couple of dollars an...

Yeah, unfortunately being located on an island means all our fuel has to be barged in so just getting it delivered here makes it much more expensive. It's even worse in some areas of Alaska, we went to another island near here a couple of months ago and it was closer to $5/gallon there!

Gas is still $4.19 here, and has been for quite a while. We get our gas at a station affiliated with the supermarket where we shop and with our shopping rewards we sometimes get up to .10/gallon off, plus we also get airline miles every time we buy gas so I guess that helps (somewhat). I find it...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

After a nice three-day weekend, my workweek started off in a not very fun way: I have jury duty, and the trial will possibly last most of the week. Not what I really wanted to be doing this week (or any week, truthfully).

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

That's okay. I don't normally tear up easily but this time of year I just get a little more sentimental...my late son's birthday was October 29 and even though he's been gone 16 years now it's not hard to get me going some days! My DIL works with many children who have it pretty tough at home...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

Okay, now I'm sitting here sniffling trying to pretend my allergies are acting up! :) You've already made such a HUGE difference to those kids, showing them what it's like to have somebody who cares for them like a real parent should. That is something that will stay with them for the rest of...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

That is heartbreaking, and it's such a helpless feeling to know that there are some things we can't fix. But I know having you and your husband as a stable, loving influence in their lives is already making a huge difference to those kids.

Eeeeeeek! You have my sympathy.

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

If it were easy to take something out, I've got lots of things I'd be happy to get rid of. But other things that I should remember (like my everyday one...did I unplug my straightening iron before we left for work?!) just don't stick. A friend of mine says that's because part of your brain is...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

Gosh, I wish that was true of everything that truly wasn't important....I always have song lyrics, ad jingles, movie quotes, and other totally unimportant stuff rattling around in there that I wish would just go away already! :)

We have to do the same thing every time, too! My husband thought he remembered and just started pushing buttons and messed up the satellite radio so I had to dig out the book. It's really simple, I don't know why we can't remember it!

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

We only got a few trick or treaters last night, a couple before we left to take my granddaughter out and four more after we got home. We had fun and the weather wasn't bad, just one rain shower when we first went out and then it was nice. I always get a kick out of all the little kids in...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

We have a trunk or treat in the parking garage of my office and there's one area of town that really makes a big deal out of all the houses being decorated and they block off the roads from car traffic so most of the kids go there, but we still get a few door-to-door in our neighborhood. I...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

Wow, sounds like our normal late-October weather. This year has not been normal for us, weather-wise...we are currently having 50 degree temps and sunshine, so at least the weather for trick or treating will be pleasant. I told my 8-year-old granddaughter that we'd take her out (the kids...

    Question on turn downs

I agree with txls that "recruiting" generally means actually seeking them out, and would not necessarily include those who came to you and applied after seeing a position advertised. I've seen this type of agreement before where it specifically stated that it did not apply to those who came to...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

That would be my guess. I recently sent out a memo about our health insurance renewal, along with a summary of benefits I got from the insurance company. I didn't realize that some wording in the summary made it sound like we'd dropped our dental & vision (it just covered the medical part of the...

    Mental Health Thread #4 -- Fall/Winter

I've always been grateful that we only have 145 employees when something like that happens. I remember one woman who signed up for life insurance, filled out all the enrollment forms including evidence of insurability, and after the first premium was deducted, decided she wanted to cancel. I...

We are one of a number of banks I know who do not close for Columbus Day. The Federal Reserve is closed, but for us it's business as usual. I had to laugh when I overheard my assistant having a phone discussion with a vendor who was insisting "But all the banks are closed today!" while she kept...

Those are great, ferret! I think I've seen every one of them at least once. My personal least favorite is the "nervous twitcher". I remember one employee who came to talk to me about a warning he'd received and although I offered him a chair, he insisted on standing up and he paced back and...

Mental Health Thread #3 - Any vacations planned?

My answer usually differs depending on who's calling. If it's someone I know has a more informal relationship with the person they're calling, I might say "oh, he's at lunch but he should be back in an hour" but if it's someone I don't know or don't know what kind of relationship they have with...
