You didn't have a trial - you really don't understand what you're saying.
You had some apparently serious charges. Being in jail for a month because you couldn't post bond is not unusual for someone charged with multiple felonies.

At the very least a person in New York would be charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle if not Grand Larceny.
The boroughs of NYC are counties. NYC is the only city in the state that is comprised of more than one county.
Although for purposes of criminal procedure New York City is considered to be a single county.
In the jurisdictions where I work, if the rental company reports it stolen it is treated as a grand larceny (auto). You can't just take rental cars and not return them..
