I don't really know how to begin this so I'll go into my story.

Me and my girlfriend went to Wal-mart a few days ago. It wasn't a premeditated thing, but seeing how expensive everything she wanted was and how low on cash we both were, it was just too tempting. I didn't take anything for myself, and she didn't really ask me to steal the stuff for her, but I ended up with a shower curtain, pepperoni, and some socks in my pocket. I got caught, and I tried to get her out of blame first, but I guess it looked like she was telling me what to take so she was taken in too.

The police were called, and the officer was having a bad day or just has a hatred for shoplifters because he was very threatening and standoffish. Her parents hired an attorney for her so she can do everything she can to get the charges to disappear, but I don't expect similar aid because of the mentioned above money issues. I've been looking into diversion and things that will increase my chances for it, but I'd like to get feedback from others. It was a stupid mistake, but i feel like I can't talk to anyone about it without them being angry and disappointed in me.

Pretty much what I'm asking for is links to sites where I can get more information on what I can do or someone I can talk to that could give me good advice on how to keep this stupid mistake from ruining my life. I'm a college student right now, and I'm worried my future is lost forever. Please help me.

Your are at one of the best "links" for help with what to do once your caught shoplifting. Yes diversionis your best option but not having money should not stop you. Most Attorneys offer free consultations get as many as you can. Get the info you need then if you do not hire once ask for public defender. Take what you learned to public defender. One other thing I can mention is enrolling in an Anti Shoplifting program.
