Hi,

I am a 23 year old gradutate student. I got caught at Urban Outfitters at Georgetown DC. It is my first time. I am so mad at myself after it happened. I tried to take $75 value of clothes. I signed a form and she wrote down my SSN and phone number. No police involved. The sales person told me I was banned from the store for 3 years. She also gave me a copy of civil demand notice. She said their law firm (Law office of Palmer, Reifler & Associate, PA) will contact me. I told her that I don't want to go to the court. She said they will probably ask me to pay for a fine. My questions are:

1) If i need to consult a lawyer, should I find a DC lawyer or VA lawyer since I live in VA?
2) I am an international student with student visa, I don't want this ruin my life or job searching, will this show on any of my record?
3) When the letter comes, should I pay for the fine or should I ignore? I read that this law firm send out lots of letters every year, and they don't really sue people. I am broke right now. I don't know how I will be able to pay.
Thank you

You are lucky ! you'll have no criminal record...so just pay the store fines...they can set some payment arrangements! Good luck!

Pay the fine. You won't need a lawyer because no criminal charges were pressed. If you did go to court you would need a DC Lawyer or a VA lawyer who has a license in DC.

Work out a payment arrangement bc n paying this fine could ruin your credit.

Several things can happen when you fail to pay civil Demand one is a negative report being filed with credit reporting agencies. This can harm you in many ways
