5 years ago I plead no contest to a shoplifting charge in wisconsin. I was a minor at the time. I did some community service and it was all taken care of. Now I am not a minor and have moved to minnesota. I am under the impression that once I turned 18 it was removed from my record because it was a misdemeanor, but I dont know how that works. I was wondering if it will show up on a background check when I apply for a job or if I still need to write it on job applications.

You got bad info. Records are not erase unless expunged and even then not totally. Read any job application carefully! Some ask for covictions, some only felonies, some only records in last (insert years) number of years, some just adult. Note if you lie and the emplyer finds out, even months or years later, you can be fired. So unless your case was differed or was ACD, Diversion or the like there is a record. Whether or not it turns up in a background check depends on who is running the check and how through
