I was at a store today to pick up things.

I went through the self check out line was having issues w the check out station had an employee come help scan my items and put the bags in my cart.

I paid for my items and proceeded to my car. The alarm went off and I handed my recite over to the door lady. At that moment I realized I did not scan those tiny items of cosmetics at the bottom of my cart under all the bags of purchased items.

I was mortified and embarrassed and was taken back and had to do paper work for the small items. I have no idea how I missed these in my cart. But I am 30 years old I am a nurse I have money and I am married with two children. I am horrified. They told me I would get a court date and treated me like a criminal. I have never been in trouble in my life EVER. I am sick to my stomach. My question is how much trouble will I be in?

What you need to understand is that the store, the law enforcement officers, the attorneys and the court, have heard your exact story many, many times before. Unless you happen to be the first case of the day, it won't even be the first time that day they've heard it. Maybe it's true in your case, maybe you're just trying out the story to see how it flies. But either way, the fact that 9 out of 10 shoplifters claim to have forgotten to scan their items, or didn't remember they were in the bag, or their kid put it in the cart without their knowledge, or some variant of the same, isn't going to help you much.

So you might want to discuss it with a lawyer.

When a person is arrested, talking about it, offering an excuse, giving a statement does you no good.
If you are ever arrested again, you'll never talk your way out of it.
Its best to admit to nothing, be calm, remain polite, and give only your name, date of birth, address, and say you wish to use your right to remain silent.

So, you appear when and where you're told, plead not guilty, HIRE A LAWYER (this isn't a murder charge, but its not speeding beef, either); and speak of this ONLY to your lawyer.

In the interim, you stay out of additional trouble, stay out of THAT store, and wait for your day in court.

Thank you I am just so embarrassed. I do understand that they have herd that many times. I even told the lady good work for Doing your job! However my goodness I have never felt so mortified on my life:( the first thing I thought of was my kids and how this will look to them. I pride myself on setting good examples for them and man honest mistake. I will definitely be understanding and cooperative and do what I am told and be humble for sure!

The "Accidental shoplifting" defense almost NEVER works read this http://www.parentnook.com/accidental-shoplifting/ I am not saying you did this on purpose just that no Judge or jury is likely to buy it. Consult a local Attorney, several is good since most offer free consultations. Ask about defense options. Ask about ACD or Diversion as plea option. This can protect your clean record
