Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft accused of shoplifting at thrift st, guess I did by accident

Last week while shopping at a local thrift store in California, I was trying on rings, none of which really fit. When I went to pay for my items, the clerk asked if I had chosen any of the rings. I told her no. Paid for my items with my credit card, the clerk asked for my ID, which is normal. I left with my items with no problems. Yesterday a letter came in the mail from the police department accusing me of shoplifting. I looked through my items and found no rings. Today I put on the rain boots I had purchased and stepped on a ring that I thought I had put back on the display. I don't know what to do now. Please help. This is a $14.99 ring. I've never been accused of any crime, have no police history, and shop at this thrift store about once a week. Please help.

It seems the store might have already filed a Police report if so there is not much that can be done at this time. Contact the Police and see if criminla charges have been filed. then go from there base don what your told. Admit to nothing and make no excuses only find out if a Police report was filed
