Was stopped by a security man from a store and brought to back room and asked to remove items from my purse that weren't paid for. The total was 29$
I had to give my ID to verify my name and address, was asked why, and had to sign 2 papers - not sure of what exactly was on them. Was too nervous to recall any info - but one had to do with the civil settlement that they said I would receive in the mail. No cops were called, I asked if I was going to be arrested and the guy said no he was not calling the cops at this time. There was another worker there too, a lady possibly a manager. She did not talk at all. All the items were returned without damage done or anything and I was escorted to the front door and he asked "will I have a problem with you in the future' and I said no. He was nice enough about it all but I'm worried sick. I can pay the fine or whatever, just want to make sure I won't end up in court. It's my first offense. All I've ever done before is get a speeding ticket but that was when I was 18 and I am 25 now.
Please help I have bad anxiety :(

Just wait to receive the demand letter.
When it arrives go get a money order, mail it to the person demanding the payment, make (and keep copies of everything), and that'll keep the tiger from biting you.

In the future, STOP STEALING, and you'll reduce your anxiety level.

I am a Retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. Pay the civil demand (few hundred dollars) and this is over. You got off lucky just do as instructed and you should be fine

shrinkmaster,
For knowledge sake can you describe to the OP what happens if they don't pay the civil demand letter?

I see these posts everyday here from people who shoplift (usually at Walmart haha!).

I am familiar with demand letters and have had an attorney send one on my behalf in the past...they are usually more of a threat that ends up being unenforceable unless the threatening party has the means and $$$$ to see them through. Just curious a little more about your insight into the demand letters of this nature. Thanks.

If no police were called & you pay the civil demand, that "should be" the end of it.
