I work as a contractor in a store where I have no supervisor present. I have used this to my advantage to steal twice.
I rent a space in one of their aisles and have two drawers open to my use to store displays and work-related items.
I have testers for almost all of the products in my aisle for customers to try out.
Today, I did not have a certain tester out on a display that I had set up of my product so a woman who was browsing opened up one of the live products and used it as a tester. The policy regarding this is that we are to 'damage' the item and return it to the store to be taken care of (thrown away).
I got greedy and thought that I would take it home and put it to good use instead. I had a lot of other products out so I started to tidy up, putting things away in drawers and such, and I put the item in one of my front pockets (which is actually common for me when I am moving a product from one place to another).
No one saw me at the time and once I had finished tidying up I left the store (bad move in retrospect) to put the item in my car in case I was stopped at front by security. I then made an even dumber move and, after leisurely making use of the restroom inside, went back to my display table, tidied things up a bit, and went over to one of the LPs with the empty box claiming not to know who took it. ((Why did I do this?? AGHH)) He and I are friendly/flirty (I am a relatively young girl with a big personality) and I really didn't know what the procedure would be.
Long story a little less long, he paged another LP to come out, she took the box, and said she would check the cameras for the last hour to see what happened. DOH! Really, I know how stupid this was of me and feel immense regret and have been beating myself up all day over it.
I have a camera at the end of my aisle but I'm not sure if they will have definitive proof considering the size of the box (small and slender) that I put in my pocket and the fact that I am constantly digging in my pouches, pulling things out and putting things in. I have a feeling that I am suspected, nothing happened before I left work though, and the initial security guard that I went up to had multiple opportunities to take me aside or search me before I left.
Anyway, what I would like to do is return to work on my next shift, do my ritual morning clean up and say that I accidentally mistook the damaged product as the tester since the woman had been using it on her face and that I unwittingly put it in my drawer and found it this morning so I can damage it out. Is this likely to cause more suspicion or clear me of it?
Thank you so much for reading this and any advice is very much appreciated.
