I was cited for animal cruelty (16-12-4) on June 25th for leaving my dog in the car while working for an hour. She was taken to the shelter. I called the following day to check on her and was told that i could not receive any info nor visit/have her back until after i appear in court on July 25th. On July 1st, the shelter contacted me stating that my dog became very ill that morning and they wanted me to pick her up. I asked if this was okay and they told me that they worrked independently of the sherriff's office and that they could release her to me. When i picked her up they told me that she was dehydrated when she was brought in but that was all, and that their vet believed she could have been ill from Parvo or another virus, or it was stress from the change in environment (they did not test her for illnesses).
They told me i could take her home or to a vet but asked me to please see a vet and keep them informed because they get attached. I kept my word and took her by a vet where the tech said they believed it to be Parvo or another virus because of how emaciated she appeared and her symptoms. They needed $200 upfront (did not accept deposits or payments), so i told them I would have to come up with the money somehow. In the meantime i took care of her at home and contacted the shelter and let them know what happened.
The following morning i asked the shelter if they knew of anyplace i could take her because of my financial situation and they said they knew of nowhere she could go to without money. I called a vet, described her symptoms, and they also believed it was Parvo and told me what i could do for her at home. I kept her in the dining area with fresh water while i was at work. My roommate called me at around 10 pm saying my dog was releasing blood instead of stool and she had called an emergency vet and was waiting to be called back. the vet never called and we tried to contact another office but they wouldn't see her without $264 in fees upfront just for the emergency visit. She passed away at abour 9 a.m the following morning (July 3rd). I called the shelter and let them know and they told me i could bury her but i asked them to make sure that it was okay with the sherriff. the sherriff said it was fine and to get a vet report to the shelter. I cannot get a vet report since she was not tested, only statements from the vet (the shelter told me today this was fine).
I need to know: am i facing multiple charges now that she has passed? would i be able to plea first offenders, and if so, how?
