Applying for a patent online, yea or nay??

I have an idea for an invention and am considering applying for a patent. I'd like to hear opinions about using one of the online sites to apply for it, as opposed to hiring a patent attorney. I'm sure the patent attorney will cost $5000 or so, probably more, it looks like one of the websites will get it done for like $300. It almost sounds too good to be true. :nuts
