I know someone who was recently arrested in New York City for shoplifting. It's a first time offense and the item shoplifted had a value of about $10. Does he need a lawyer? If found guilty, what would be the likely sentence/penalty the court would give? The person arrested has some "psychological issues". Would that help his case?
