First time offense, first time I've ever done it (clearly I'm no good at it).

The dr. put me on Effexor and Seraquel for extreme anxiety disorder and/or bipolar disorder. It's DEFINITELY changed my personality and behavior.

I'm otherwise an upstanding citizen, never stolen so much as a post-it note in my life.

I'm 22, WASP female. (Basically. )

It was at a department store, just shoved a bunch of bikinis in my shopping bag, didn't even think twice. Which REALLY alarms me, and has been added to my issues in therapy.

I got charged with a Class A Misdemeanor. Court date set for August. I make too much money to qualify for a court-appointed lawyer, but not enough to hire one on my own.

Is blaming the meds even a credible thing to do? Because I don't know where else I could take this!

The first judge I saw before being booked into jail after being arrested told me to ask for deferred to judication? (Sp??) Or pre---something----trial (I've forgotten!)...??

Any advice as to how I could represent myself would be appreciated.

What sort of witnesses would I need?

Thanks.

If you are going to blame the medications, be prepared for a trial and its probably going to expose your medical records, etc..

We had a newscaster out here go to trial for shop lifting, she also chose a trial and blamed her meds. She was still found guilty but she probably will not do much jail time. Alot of embarassing information about her was exposed in the process. Sometimes trials are just not worth it.

Honestly, you really need an attorney. I am surprised you do not qualify for a PD so you really should seek counsel.

Thank you for your gentleness. I posted this question on the FreeAdvice.com forums, and they were rude and just wanted the chance to tear me down as a criminal.

I think I'll go ahead and seek counsel with an attorney, try to arrange some kind of payment plan or something because I can't do this myself.

I realize the "meds" defense is sketchy at best, but this is my first time ever in such a situation and I really have no clue where to go or what to do.

Thanks again.

Yes the med defense is sketchy and be advised, a trial is going to be VERY time consuming and expensive. You did steal the items, so you might be able to do a plea bargain of some sort. I would at least consult with a lawyer.
