This past Friday I was arrested for shoplifting from my local supermarket. The reason I am so concerned is because I am worried of having a petty theft charge on my record. Today I stopped by my local supermarket and gave the head manager a apology letter also asking him whether I can volunteer as many hours as needed (bagging groceries or stocking shelves) to try to learn from my mistake rather then just pay court fees.
The manager that was there on the day I was arrested was not in work today (Mr. Wolf). And when the days manager noticed that I was arrested the previous Friday he told me I was not allowed in the store and if I came back I would be arrested again. I gave him my letter and hope he forwards it to Mr. Wolf.
My question to you would be. Is it OK if I call to follow up regarding my letter? I was hoping that I could take the next four weeks, till my court date on July 28th, to work hard to right the huge wrong that I've made in hopes that they might drop the charges.
Unfortunately, I am ashamed to admit that I was arrested for shoplifting in MA a few years ago and now live in NY state. So this would be my second arrest.
I am starting a new job in NY in 5 weeks (as a kindergarten assistant teacher) and am afraid that this might jeopardize my job. Is there anything else I can do between now and my impending court date to help possibly drop the chargers? Does the store have an easy way of dropping the charges if they wanted to? Should I keep hounding the manages for volunteer hours?
Finally, I think I'm going to have to settle with a public defender because I can not afford a private attorney. Do you have any advice?
