Hi. I was recently caught shoplifting about $30 worth of merchandise from a store. They took me into a room, filled out papers and then called the police. I was arrested, taken to the city police department, then the county jail. I admitted I knew what I did was wrong, complied with all officers, was polite and gave no problems. I have a spotless record, I'm a full-time college student and have kept a job since the day I turned 16. I'm 19 . They gave me a court date. What do you think will happen? BTW this is in Florida

Ok that still does not explain why you were jailed for a crime in which the norm is to cite and release. However if that is indeed the case you should talk to your Attorney about Diversion as defense option

Ok thank you. Do you think that because they took such a harsh punishment at the time I was caught that court will be a little bit easier?

Did you have ID? Was it a FL ID? Were they able to positively identify you? They probably wanted to put you through the system and get your fingerprints/booking photo.

Technically they can take you to booking for ANY criminal offense even though most officers will normally issue a citation in lieu of arrest.

Yes, I had my ID and it was in fact a FL ID. The officer who took me to the city pd was very nice and even told me she thought it was ridiculous, but it was what the store wanted..I know I did something wrong, I'm extremely embarrassed and disappointed in myself and I'm just worried this will really affect the rest of my life
