I have a pending case of assault by contact. I plead not guilty. I have been told that this a misdemeanor and no jail time is involved, so therefore is no public defender. I have to be my own attorney. How do I handle this situation? Should I be looking for an attorney?

Can you afford one? If so then it doesn't matter if a public defender is appointed.
It wouldn't hurt to talk to a few and get an idea of what your options are and how to proceed.
If you proceed without an attorney then your answer to every question in court should either be "Not guilty" or "I don't understand".
