My 15 year old son was caught stealing 4 dvds from a local Target store while there shopping with his mother. No law enforcement agencies were contacted and he was not arrested. The store released him and my wife with the promise that he could not return to the store until after he turned 18. I just received a demand for $368.74 from ''Assets Protection Recovery.'' There is a statement that says ''Payment of this claim is a release of your civil liability, but does not preclude possible criminal prosecution by local law enforcement officials.'' What are my options and the associated consequences?

Did your wife or son sign anything at the store? Anyway doesn't matter; What you describe is standard procedure and you will have to pay or they will take you to court and can file criminal charges. As he was not arrested at that time, more than likely, if you pay, then criminal charges won't be pressed.
