i`m due to go to court 19th sep for falling behind on council tax payments, it is now in the hands of an insolvancy company, i owe around £1200 in council tax, but they have added an extra £2000 onto in fees, I`ve offered to pay £50 per month to clear it, i`ve sent them my expenditure sheet from my debt management plan showing how much i can afford, but they want £1000 per month to pay it off, I don`t want to lose my house over £3000 but how can i resolve this matter? preferbly before it goes to court?

Hi, I'm in the UK and work for a local authority collecting council tax and sometimes use the Insolvency Act. I'm not sure why an Insolvency Practitioner is involved before you are declared bankrupt. Nor does it sound like an IVA proposal. Your debt, although above the limit of £750, does seem quite low for such action and pre-bpt court should include costs of up to £1000.

Email me barrie.minney@brighton-hove.gov.uk or ring 01273 291876 for advice.
