A while ago I noticed that my middle name on my birth certificate and my middle name on my kids birth certificate has the wrong spelling, a letter or two is mixed around. I told them about it and the lady at the birth certificate office said no problem bring ss card in to your appointment, that I would just have to pay a fee to get it corrected, when I went in another person told me I signed something so I cannot get it corrected, I would have to get a lawyer, this dont make any sence to me, dont they want the correct spelling on the birth certificates, how can they even get the wrong spelling, dont they already have records of the correct spelling? what should i do?

You can't change the name on YOUR birth certificate easily.

Your parents would have to initiate that action.

You didn't name yourself.

Your parents named you.

You're stuck with the spelling, unless your parents initiate the change. Even then, it won't be easy.

It might be easier to bring a court action seeking a legal name change, if the spelling is that important to you. Be advised, you'll likely need an attorney to assist you in that effort. That could be very costly.

Google name change in Indiana, that way you'll at least learn how to go about that process.
