Brazillian tourist with 'drinking in public' ticket- not paid

Jurisdiction / State: New York

Hello all

I am a Brazillian citizen who visited New York last year and stupidly did not brush up on the laws around drinking in public, and got myself a ticket for it. I managed to get a friend to pay it by cheque, but he didn't.

My question is- does my not payment mean I have committed a criminal offence? (the public drinking one is, from what I can tell, only a petty offense- but i did not pay it within the specified time and did not show in court)

And also- how can I find out if this counts as being arrested or having a criminal record?
I have tried calling various court houses in Brooklyn but I'm really having no luck, can anyone suggest how to find out whether I have a record in the States- as I really want to visit your beautiful country again!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light.

Not only was it a criminal offense, you likely have a warrant for your arrest out. Come back and get arrested? You might not even get a visa.

If you didn't pay the ticket & didn't show up in court, agree that there is probably a warrant out for you.

You can rectify this very easily, if it means that much to you.

You can call the court and inquire how much it will cost to settle the original citation and the failure to appear.
You can write the court and inquire how much it will cost to settle the original citation and the failure to appear.
Once you know what it'll cost, where to send the payment, you simply get yourself a money order in US dollars for the amount they say you owe, and send them their tribute.
Enclose a self addressed, stamped envelope into which they can place your receipt and mail it to you.

Or, you can search yoru case online, and perhaps pay through the court's website:

http://www.courts.state.ny.us/

The only issue with that is, what court?

If you call, you can inquire about paying electronically and online.

Ain't it great living in the 21st century?
