I'm currently a college student getting ready to graduate this spring. I have good reason to suspect that my adviser has been telling others some of my confidential personal information concerning my education. These people have then told others, so on and so forth until it got back to me. She is the only person who could have told others about this information. What I am wondering is if I could pursue a legal case against her for breach in confidentiality.

Thank you and I look forward to your responses.

Your posting indicates that there is a lot of hearsay going on... If you are sure that it is your counselor who is "spilling the beans", ask him/her on your next visit to keep the conversation confidential. You have no legal case here. Good Luck!

Plus, not all the information you provide may be legally privileged in any way. Social security number, financial information, and even identifying info might be, but what your major might be or how well you are doing in some classes may not be protected in any way. It might be a violation of school policy, but may not be any legal breach at all.
