Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Called by a police officer attempting to coerce me

I purchased an item in a gift shop while visiting my parents. Several days later I received a phone call from a person identifying himself as an investigator. He asked if I had been in the gift shop, I said I was. He asked if I found items that I did not pay for. I said I had not. He accused me of lying, encouraged me to cooperate by driving 1.5 hrs to the police station. He claimed to have video of me trying on rings, that I did not put one of them back. He asked me if I left the ring in the store. I was uncomfortable, even thought maybe it was a prank call, so I ended the call saying that I was going to get legal advice. The next day I called the number back to confirm that it was a police department. I spoke with another investigator asking if I had a warrant, his reply was that if the officer called me then he is still conducting an investigation so there wouldn't be a warrant. Can I simply ignore this?

Never discuss anything with the police that could implicate you in a crime.
You have the right to remain silent.
I suggest that all of us use it.
No one ever talks himself out of an arrest.
The police want you to confess.
Nothing you can say will stop an arrest or a prosecution from going forward against you.
If you are arrested, cooperate, be calm, don't blab - other than name, address, date of birth, and similar info - MUM'S THE WORD!

I wouldn't do anything unless you are arrested - then obtain a lawyer & speak only with the lawyer.

I am a retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. You are NOT required to answer any Police questions and nor should you without an Attorney. If they call back tell them you have no intention of answering any Police questions without an Attorney. Do not even deny you stole anything. If you did not then you have to fear if you did then the WORST thing you can do is talk to Police.
