Can I get my down payment back if I never drove off the lot with the vehicle

I went into a used car lot and put a down payment on a Dodge Charger as well as signed a contract before I then decided not to go with the vehicle so I asked for my down payment back. The salesmans told me to sign the contract and he would get my down payment back because I told him I would return the next day to get the car,so he told by signing the contract it would save the car so that no one else could come and purchase it. I never got the full coverage insurance that was required to drive the vehicle off the lot(hence the car was never truly delivered to me)..after signing the contract the salesman said I could not get my deposit back and that I had to take the car because I could not come in and waste their time ..can they make me get the car if I. Changed my mind and the car was never drove the car off the lot ..can they keep my down payment??? Plz respond help really needed p.s the carlot is a inhouse finance place

Sorry, you paid the money, you signed the contract, it's your car, you are responsible for fulfilling the terms of the contract by getting the insurance, no matter what it costs you.

If you don't, then the car is a repo and there are plenty of consequences.

If you never took delivery of the vehicle they will likely have to give you your money back. The question is how many hoops they will make you jump through to get it.
The salesman telling you to sign the contract in order to get a refund sounds pretty shady.
If you are still talking to salesman you need to go a step higher. If they remain unresponsive then take your issue to a couple local attorneys. Car dealers have assets so I'm sure you won't have trouble getting legal assistance if they see something they can work with.

You really made a bad move by signing the contract, but it doesn't sound like you are up the creek yet.

Why would you EVER sign a contract if you didn't want to buy something? You're pretty well screwed now. It's your car.
