My jurisdiction is: Tennessee

I received an inheritance of $35,000 and gave it to my boyfriend, with the intention of us using it in the future. I gave it to him, because my credit is bad, and his is good. I wanted to show that even though i wasn't smart with money in the past, I could contribute to the future. We had discussed marriage and buying a home together, but had not been engaged. We were living in an apartment together, but it was in his name only. Now, we are probably breaking up, and i'm not sure that he is going to give the money back. Is there anything I can do, or did I just throw 35,000 away?

Sorry for being blunt, but you aren't any smarter with money now either. How would giving him the money show anything?

If he doesn't give the money back then the only way to get it back would be to go to court. Then, you are going to need to prove you gave him the money. If you have a bank statment of his that shows this, then it's a good start.

However, even if you win and you get a judgment against him, he does not have to just hand it right over to you. If he has gone and spent the money, or otherwise gotten rid of it in some way, then he will have to pay the judgment back, but that may be in the form a wage garnishment.

Basically, unless he just hadns it over to you, then you are only going to get that money back in small doses, if you see it at all.
