hey guys,

first time posting here. so heres what happened. It was prom night last weekend, and i left my blazer(with my wallet in it) at the coat check. When i get my jacket back. I check my wallet and see that the 50$ i had in it are gone. I go back to the coat check girls and ask them what the heck is going on. They tell me a guy(whos name i know, and he goes to my school) came in and was in a hurry, had lost his stub and told them which jacket was his. He left with mine.. and brought it back saying it wasnt his after all and got his. This is most likely how he took 50$ of mine. Ive talked to this guy at school and he denies it.

Can this guy be charged for petty theft? Its either that or i beat the heck out of him...

thanks in advance

Check your state laws on petty theft by googling your state's name and then typing petty theft laws. You probably would have to have valid proof that you actually had the fifity in your wallet at the time of theft. Also, someone would probably hvae to have seen him actuallt take the money out of your wallet. Who knows for sure the coat check persons didn't tkae it before he accidently took the jacket. were the coat check persons hired help? Speak to the people/company that they are employed by about the problem and see what they are willing to do. If they were volunteers, I don't know that you can do much except tell the people who had them volunteer. Usually there is a disclaimer that the people checking your coat is not responsible for items in their care, and that would include your wallet. Chalk it up to experience and in the future keep your money in a money clip in your pocket. That goes for all valuables, never leave them in the care of another.
