There are several issues here.
When we moved in, the refrigerator was broken (it worked for a few days then gave out as a result of being sprayed with detox chemicals after the last tenants had a meth lab in the place). The LL had another refrigerator in the upstairs rental unit (which was unoccupied). We severely needed another refrigerator before our food spoiled, so we asked the LL if we could move the unit from upstairs to down, since we knew he himself wouldnt get around to it for days. He gave us permission, and so we did. in the process we broke a $0.50piece on it. He charged us for this piece, but not for our labor. Is something wrong with this? (i know, $0.50 is nothing, but its the principle)
Secondly, we broke a curtain rod while living there. He charged us for the price of the curtain rod, as well as HIS time to drive at get it and install it. I have no issue with paying for the rod, but from what I understand, LL's are not allowed to charge for the time they put into repairs. Is this true, or is he justified in charging us $20/hr to drive to pick up the new rod and install it?
Last of all, our former LL is now witholding deposit money until we replace an undamaged hinge cover on the refrigerator. The hinge cover is sitting on top of the refrigerator just waiting to be screwed on. Is this justifiable?
