I have been a guardian of a 6 yr old boy since he was 8 mo old and now we would like to adopt him. there has been no contact with the birth mother or the father since 2006. they were never married, i was given this opportunity through the child services as I was the baby sitter. what can I do to adopt, i have ask and keep getting told that it will cost me over 5000.00 and that I still have to have permission, even though there is a law that states after a year with no contact I can do it without permission, what should I do? I want to keep my son even but I dont want to go broke, we are the only family he knows and now he wonders why his name is different. I want to change all that and make this permanent.
