I was just in an accident yesterday and it was not my fault. I was planning on reinstating my policy as soon as I got some extra money but times have been rough financially. I reinstated my policy that same day after the accident.
An elderly man was making a left turn as I was driving through the intersection and we collided. It was clearly his fault. I'm pretty sure the damages will be more than the value of my car. I also have neck and shoulder pain. I went to the ER at a community hospital today to get evaluated and the MD said I had classic whiplash and gave me a referal to a PT. They also took X-Rays. Just that one visit totaled to over $700! I couldn't believe it!
This was my first accident and I did not take pictures at the scene, get witnesses, or file any report which I regret now that everyone has told me I shoud have. But from what I've been told its a pretty open and shut case simply by looking at the damages. The other party already filed a claim and I was told that the adjuster from his insurance company will be contacting me Monday.
Since I got my new policy through a broker (freeway insurance) I will have to call the actual insurance co. Monday morning to make them aware of the accident. I told the broker but I don't think they included that in my policy renewal paperwork. Honestly, I was so annoyed with them because they are such money stealing crooks! I called them out on all these extra broker fees they were charging me after being told I wouldn't have to pay any broker fees over the phone since I was a returning customer. Of course they gave me the "that employee is new" story. She even made the comment that most people don't read they just want to know where to sign, and chuckled!
I am scared that although I did renew my insurance the same day, it was not in effect at the time of the accident. I'm assuming the other parties adjuster will find that out once they contact my insurance agency and will report it to the state. Also, the SR-1 form (which I have not sent yet) specifically asks if your policy was in effect and I'm assuming they check all that with the insurance agency. Please give me some advice because I am a new graduate/professional and supposed to start a new job in a week. Thank you.
