Car Title Transfer

My boyfriend is trying to get his license and had a car lined up to buy. The person selling the car to him was getting impatient waiting for him to get his license and he needed to sell the car as soon as possible. My boyfriend decided that he had to ask his parents to take his money to buy the car in his mother's name until he can get his license. The insurance, however, is in his name and he and his mother both have copies of the keys. The man who sold them the car is aware of the situation and understands that he, and not his mother, is actually the one buying the car. The only problem is that his mother has history of stealing from him when she feels so inclined and is angry with him. My question is, if she refused to transfer the car into his name once he has his license, if there is anything that we would be able to do to make her transfer the title or any other way of getting the car under his name?

If the car is purchased and titled in mom's name, then it is mom's car. If you want to avoid problems, wait until the license is obtained. There are plenty of other cars out there to buy.

If you were to proceed and mom refused to sign over the car later, you could sue mom for whatever dollar amount you are out, but likely could not force her to sign it over.Actually getting mom to pay an amount awarded in court could be another trick.

Personally, I would wait and choose another car.
