Hello,

In 2012 I bought a 2000 VW Beatle. From the start the car had issues, first the battery, then the alarm would go off randomly. Those were the least of the problems. I found out later while trying to register it that it wouldnt pass smog, and it wasn't smogged before the sale. The guy I bought it from (a used car salesman) "smogged" it and everything seemed ok. It finally broke down. I was financed through him and we agreed on me giving the car back and me getting a new car. The car was dead in front of my house and he was supposed to send someone to tow it away. He only sent two men at the same time and they wanted to drive it away but the car didn't start. The car sat there through 3 parking tickets and finally got towed. Me thinking whatever, went on with my life. I got a call from a collection agency saying I owed them over 3,000 for the remaining towing fees. He apparently never turned in anything to the dmv stating that the car was no longer mine. Now I'm in debt for over 3,000 and am not sure what I can do to fix it. I have the paper work stating that I gave the car back. What should I do?

the city had the car towed, which I thought he had finally come to pick it up. It sat in the tow yard then they sold it. The remaining tow fees are from what they didn't get at the auction.

You can pay the debt, ignore the debt and your credit will be trashed, plus a judgment might be issued against you and your wages could be levied.

The only ways to defeat them are: pay it, or file bankruptcy, IF YOU QUALIFY.

If you did not notify the DMV that you no longer owned the car (a release of liability) then you are on the hook for the fees.
It was your responsibility to notify the DMV, nobody else.
It was also your responsibility that the vehicle was parked in a place where it received 3 citatations, and your responsibility for not moving the car even after receiving the citations. You could have pushed it if you had to.
Sorry... your best way out of this is to pay up. They should work with you on a payment plan.
