Hi,
I'm a 20-yr-old female with no past criminal record. I was caught shoplifting yesterday (literally, my first time...and it was on a dare. I'm so stupid...) at K-Mart, roughly 27 dollars worth of items. My information was taken down, the police were called, and I was released in the parking lot, after the police wrote down the information. I was told by the policemen that I would be prosecuted, and sent a letter in the mail about what happened and I'm assuming information about my court date. I'm terrified. I have never done anything like this before, never even felt the desire to! And I am so sorry, because I would never want something stolen from me, and I feel horrible that I would do this to someone else.
My questions are:
When I show up for my court date, should I plead guilty, not guilty, or no contest?
I want this expunged from my record, so which would be the best course of action for me to take? I cannot afford a lawyer.
Also, I live at school and the address the police took down was my home address, where I have my mail sent because my parents still live there. I really would rather that they not find out about this, but I cannot intercept the letter because I don't live there right now! I have called the police station that dealt with me, as well as the clerk of courts. The clerk of courts did not yet have any record of me, as this just happened yesterday. The police told me to call the clerk of courts office in a few days. What should I do to have the address changed on the letter detailing the court date before it is sent? My father always opens my mail, and I'm terrified of this happening.
Please help,
Sophie
