Merchandise: 5 dollars
Age: 18
State: California

I got caught stealing a five dollar item from a store. An employee caught me putting it into my purse, and asked me if i was going to pay for the item in my bag, she knew i was trying to steal it, but we walked to the register and i paid for the merchandise that i was trying to conceal using my debit card. while i was paying i said sorry and she gave me a mini-lecture, and i even said i'll stop coming to the store but she didnt respond, she was just disgusted. She didnt call the cops, she didnt have me sign anything, or take my picture, or verbally ban me from the store. Ive shoplifted from there store and never got caught before. It seems like they dont have any cameras but i can be wrong.

My questions:
1. Can the employee report it to her manager and since i used my debt card, can they run an investigation with or without the assistant of the law by using the information on my card.

2. And if they did have cameras, can they use old footage (week-month old), of me shoplifting and use it against me and press one SUPER-BUNDLE-MEGA-CHARGE?
i know all in total ive probably stole no more than 50 dollars

Unless you were seen there is no reason to run anything

Yes they can but that would require then looking thorugh hours unpon hours of video footage on the chance they see something. Not very likely

Re: Caught concealling, no police, paid for item with debit

Thank you for settling question number two,

But as for question number 1:

Heres the scenerio:
I DID get caught trying to hide the merchandise, and the employee asked me if i was going to pay for it, i did pay for it, and she DIDNT verbally ban me, or have me sign any papers, or call the police. She was just annoyed, but everything else seemed like a regular sale, she was very lenient.

the question is just for the above scenerio (not including other times where i shoplifted and got away):

But since i did try to hide it, and she caught me, but i paid for it..can she use my cards information to track me down IF she feels like it, (change of heart?)? Can she open up a case where i tried to steal a 5 dollar item that i already got caught for and what can i expect from that?

Hmm its because you said
"Unless you were seen there is no reason to run anything"

i was seen, but i paid for the item, no papers were signed, no cops were called

i was just wondering if they decide to be not so lenient, will they'll be able to track me down with my card information, and pursue a civil demand thingy after letting me go so easily.

believe me, ive learned my lesson

There was no crime as you paid for item! There is no reason for them to take this further

Re: Caught concealling, no police, paid for item with debit

so in my situation concealing an item but getting caught and paying for it is nothing to worry about?

thank you for your help and your time.
ive learned my lesson.

Re: Caught concealling, no police, paid for item with debit

Once you were allowed to pay for item there was no longer a crime. If they were smart they would have never let you pay

Re: Caught concealling, no police, paid for item with debit

That is normal wording that sales clerks use when confronting thieves. "Would you like to pay for that item?" They do this to get a sale and stop thieves.

Security personnel just stop you and civil demand you and prosecute.

I am sure she told her manager and when you go in the store, they will watch you like a hawk and make comments to each other like "that's the person who tried to steal" and "look at that thief".

My advice is stay out of that store and stop stealing and you will be fine.
