I was caught shop lifting less than 25 dollars worth of merchandise @ a major department store. LP apprehended me outside the store and I was taken to the "back room" They took down my license and my SSN#, asked questions about was I working in a team, have I ever shop lifted before, what can they do to stop shoplifters ext. ext. Obviously, I responded politely and no to everything but the last one and gave my honest opinion about that one as well.
The LP was very nice and calm once she realized this was my first time offense and that I am not someone
who does this on a regular basis she was kind. I signed a paper saying I understand I am banned from the store and may be sent a letter from their attorney's stating in detail the amount of damages which they may recover from me in a legal action. The police were not called and she just said that the information she collected will be sent to corporate and I will get a letter in the mail asking for a fine.
I am worried that I will be called into court even though the police were not called and it was less than 25 dollars worth of merch. Will it be worth it to the company to go through legal actions for such a small amount, since I plan on paying the fine when it comes in the mail and the merch was returned.
The paper also stated that that the amount of damages they suffered due to my shoplifting offense is in addition to any criminal prosecution that may be brought against me.
Her demeanor while taking down my information was very informal and we were laughing at how stupid I was by the end of it. I got the impression that since she did not call the police ( which she threatened to do at first) and realized that I was not a repeat offender especially not at this department store, that all I would need to do is pay the fine.
Again My Questions Are:
Will criminal action be taken against me, even though the police were not called?
What database or list will I be placed on?
Will this effect any future job opportunities when a background check is done?
Who is going to be able to find out about this?
I am hoping that since this is my first time that I will pay the fine and be done with it. I know that this is the universes way of letting me know that I REALLY could have messed up my future, and to realize that I could have truly ruined the great life that I have. I am never putting myself through this again.
