3 of us went to "store name" and took 2 bottles of alcohol. The price range alltogether should be about $160. We walked out of the store but an undercover "store name" employee stopped us and took us into the backroom. They took our IDs and "store name" membership and made copies of them. They also took our pictures and terminated my friend's "store name" membership. We were also banned from ALL "store name" and they had us sign an agreement that we would never go on their property again. After that, they let us go home. They didn't call the cops and we weren't arrested or handcuffed. They also didn't ask any questions, just told us to take out the merchandise, sign the papers, copy our information, and leave.

This all took less than 15 minutes. It was strangely quick and I was just wondering if we will get fined, summoned to court, and/or be given any jail time or community service to do? Also, would this be on our record? We are 20, 21, 21 years of age and we live in California, US. We all go to college but have no jobs. So if we were to get fined, do we pay right away? Would this go on our record? and if so, can we make payment plans and can we get it removed from our record?

We've never shoplifted until now and we are really scared and embarrassed about all of this. We're not sure what to expect. PLEASE HELP!

for your protection your post has been edited (read link in my signature line). It sounds as though the store is seeking a civil solution to the issue. I suspect you will get a letter from the stores Attorneys requesting payment in accordance to CA law PC 490.5 or Civil Demand. Pay this and it should be over with ony record being with store and any retail theft database they might subscribe to
