Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Caught shoplifting from (Retail Store)

I am 19 years old. Live in California
Did a stupid thing and shoplift an item cost 19.57 (I don't know whether tax is included in that price they showed me). I cooperate and just answer what they asked.
They told me i can come back to the store anytime but not today, just don't ever shoplift again or they will call the PD, and i have to pay the fine which gonna comes in the mail in the next 14 days.
They took a copy my driver license, they asked for my ss but honestly i don't remember and i told them if i can email them later once i get home. They said it's not necessary. No PD was called, no picture was taken (beside the one on driver lisc). I asked if this gonna stay on my record like school or jobs? they said no.
What will happen now? Will i just need to pay the fine and never shoplift again? Will it possible for (Retail Store) to call the police after i leave the store?

You will receive a letter in the mail re the fine you will have to pay. If they didn't call the police at the time they detained you, they probably will not though there is no way we can say for sure. Just don't shoplift again.

They have the information they need if they want to make a police report late. They won't do that unless you fail to pay. They will likely ask you for a few hundred dollars.
Pay if you like, just know you are not required to pay anything unless a judge orders you to. A first time petty offense like this is typically handled as an infraction rather than a misdemeanor, so even if they make a criminal report later you can still avoid a criminal record.
Most people seem to pay, but you have options.
