hi everyone,

today i probably did one of the stupidest things in my life by trying to shoplift two things from urban outfitters that didn't have a tag attached (they recorded the total worth as $36 even though one of the items was on sale, and it shouldve really been like $28 or less). well what do you know, when i tried to walk out the sensor went off (never having done anything like this before, i didnt run and let them check my bag, with which they found the merchandise).

i was taken to the back where they took my temporary school address, my school ID number and full name, and cell number. i am 18, this is my first offence in anything. no police were involved. no merchandise was damaged. i asked for a copy of everything they sent out, which was basically a description of the situation and the info i mentioned above, as well as a brief description of what i look like (i am being banned for 3 years).

they let me know that i would be getting a packet in the mail about my charges, and im very scared, embarassed and afraid. is it possible for criminal charges to come up later? how much will i have to pay? i am currently an unemployed college student, i dont want to get my parents involved either, and i really dont know what to do now. of course i really regret it, but i cant turn time back :blush is there any kind of community service, what not, that i can do to work this off?

any help greatly appreciated. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

It appears as though they are seeking a civil solution rather than criminal one. The "packet" is probably civil demand. The packet will likely come from a law firm. Pay this right away and this event should be over. Its only aguess but I suspect civil Demand to be between $200.00 to $350.00

Thank you! Do you know how I can pay this without my parents knowing (cash?)? and also, if i can contest/pay off their charges in a different way like community service or going to some kind of class? I mainly have these concerns because I dont really have access to money.

And also, if this whole ordeal will go on my record... are they able to track me down with just my full name and college ID #?

Civil Demand is "money ". Community service etc are related to court and criminal charges. When the letter arrives it will tell you how to pay and give you contact info

ah, okay that makes sense. is there any way i can argue with them about how much they plan to charge me?

They won't listen because you shoplifted from them. Once its set you need to pay the civil demand.
