So, this is my situation. I was caught shoplifting last night and the things I took totaled $50. No police were called and I was not arrested. Just signed a trespassing form telling me I cannot go back in Their store, although the man who made me sign the form said it's only for a year, then I may go back, but if I shoplift again, then it would be a ban for life. He said I would be sent a letter in the mail from Their Corporate Office in 4-6 weeks. This letter would contain a bill for the items that I took but could be up to 5 times that amount. What I'm wondering is how much I should expect to pay because I keep hearing different things. Should I expect to pay just $50 for the items I took, 5 times that amount which is $250, or I looked online something about a Civil Demand which can be in the $200-$500 range. The man never mentioned anything about a Civil Demand, it is just something I read online. If I were to be charged with a Civil Demand, which again, wasn't even brought up in our conversation, then would I be charged that and the price of the items I took? Everything was taken back and no damage was to the items. I live in California, I know laws are different everywhere. I also read that they will maximize the amount they will charge me because they are known to do that in California. I am deeply sorry for what I did and now I have to deal with it. I just want to know what to expect. Thank you.

The civil demand is not a "charge". It is nothing more than a request to please pay the amount to avoid legal actions. If you choose to pay it then that will be the end of it. If you don't pay it then they MIGHT pursue action later. I suggest you take the letter to an attorney for advice before you agree to pay anything. You have no obligation whatsoever to pay the demand. It is not a bill or a fine.
You should expect anywhere from $200-500. It most certainly will not be $50.
