I got caught shoplifting a $20 shirt two weeks ago. LP lady stopped me outside of store and told me if I cooperated, she would not call the police. I followed her back inside and we went into a room where the security cameras were. I returned the shirt, filled out some information (name, address, social security number), and signed a form acknowledging that I was banned from the store. The LP lady told me I will be receiving a letter in the mail from the corporate office in 4-6 weeks and that they can sue me for up to ten times the cost of the item (in my case $200). I plan on paying the full amount when I receive the letter. My question is: What are the chances that the store called the police after they let me leave? I asked the lady to explain what was going to happen to me and she told me that this was what she calls a "catch and release." They got their merchandise back and let me go. I am in grad school and so worried that this will impact my chances of getting a job upon graduation. I know what I did was wrong and I deeply regret my actions. It was a huge lapse of judgment. Any one know what I can expect? Any advice? Thanks in advance for your answers.

The store has nothing to gain by filing a Police report. Now if you fail to pay the Civil Demand that could provoke such an action. To answer your question the chances are very low
