Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Caught shoplifting , NY , first offense

I was arrested for shoplifting the other day. It was worth $140 and it was my first offense. I am 20 years old and I have to appear in court in a week. How should I plead and do I really need a lawyer with me if i plead guilty? The cops said after 6 months, if i stay out of trouble, my record will be wiped clean.

If you plead guilty you will get hosed. Plead not guilty, speak with your lawyer or the public defender to consider your various options.
