I am a young adult male in New York State. Today I was caught attempting to shoplift 2 items, which I won't name, where the total value was under ten dollars. Thinking I was in the clear, the assistant manager suddenly grabs my arm as I'm almost outside, and says "it'll go easier for you if you just come with me". I went with him to the office and the manager is there too. My heart rate is out of control and I'm almost crying at this point. I immediately take the two (almost) stolen items out of my parka and start begging them not to call the police. I said I'd pay for the items and a fine right there on the spot and stay out of this grocery chain if they would just keep it a civil matter. I showed the assistant manager my driver's license and gave my address and cell phone number. For the time being, I've lucked out: I was informed that I'd be mailed a fine of no more than $100 and be banned from the store, and that's it.

Here's the problem. I've recently stolen from another location of this grocery chain (as well as several others). It is always the same item that has been stolen, never in quantities greater than two or valuing over $10. I'm not particularly concerned about the other chains, but I am worried about the one I was caught by today. Would it be reasonable to assume the manager will inform the other local stores about this incident? If so, will the store I stole from last week notice the discrepancy of the two missing inexpensive items, and care enough about it to go over their security tapes? I'm worried this store manager wont be as easy on me as the one today.

Is there a chance that the info could be shared? Yes its possible if so you could be looking at felony charges. You can do nothing at this point but wait and pray. In mean time it seems you have a theft problem. The NASP website has much valuable info you can read. They also have a program for shoplifters.

I highly suggest the NASP program as it appears you have a shoplifting problem. The admin of this site and the people of the NASP are professionals who can assist you in dealing with your shoplifting problem. If you have not already PM'd the Admin I suggest doing so as they provide a great service.

If you do use the NASP, I would reference this site to them and thank the admin on the testimonial section.
