Hi, and thanks for reading this. I'm a 17 year old in California that got caught shoplifting about $40 worth of costume jewelry 3 1/2 weeks ago at a dept store in the mall. I was caught about 10ft after walking out the door and taken into a back room. The LP who caught me was pretty nice to me, he said "Cooperate and I'll go easy on you since this is your first time." and even made small talk about my senior year. He asked me questions which I answered truthfully (if this was my first time, how old am i, social security number, address, phone number, etc) and attempted to call my parents, who didn't pick up because they were busy at work that day. The LP guy said he would have to call the cops since my parents didn't pick up, and a cop was called and when he got there he was extremely lax (he was actually eating a pretzel from the mall and drinking soda), which calmed me down a little. The cop even made small talk with me and told me never to steal again just because my friends did it and he told the LP guy "You don't need me here, just 602 and let her go." then he said to me "Be good from now on, ok? And don't listen to your friends." and then he left. The LP guy said he wouldn't press charges, but I dunno how much I can trust him since he has the right to change his mind. Anyway, mall security was called to escort me out after I signed a no-tresspassing form and a release form, and that was that. I got a civil demand, which I'm going to pay ASAP since I recently got enough money from graduation gifts to pay for it. I never told my parents since they were never involved in the first place. After reading some stories now I'm afraid I'll get a court date in the mail or something. :( Is it possible for them to file a police report after I left?
