What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY PLEASE MOVE THIS THREAD TO: Other Crimes – Federal and State

Hello, I'm sorry if this is the wrong section, I have looked over the entire forum and I am assuming this is the most appropriate one (please move the thread if not).

I'm 19 years old and sold a PS4 Destiny White Bundle Edition to a man on Craigslist about 2 weeks ago for $500. I'm almost 100% he gave me all 100 dollar bills but I could be wrong. I have been saving the money to buy things for work once it gets close to the time I have to go back to work (April 1st). I went out and bought tools, boots, grocery's, a BB Gun (I'd buy a normal handgun but I'm underage ) and a red dot sight for my rifle over the past few days of me spending this money I have earned.

My step mother calls me a few days later saying that the police are looking for me, so I panic of course and she shows me the video. The video is me at Walmart spending a 100 bill that was apparently counterfeit. Now at first I was like so what I'll just go in the police station and tell them what happened. Then I realized that I spent all that money the guy gave me and all the 100's out of it were the old 100 bill not the new ones with a hologram. So I flipped out and drove back to a store I bought tools from and asked for a manager telling them what happened and that they can call the police or give the bill I just want to see it and pay for my goods in legitimate funds. They said sorry nothing we can do. So I call the detective on the video, as seen here: search hamburg police facebook page (sorry won't let me post links) and left a message because he didn't pick up explaining everything.

The next day later he doesn't call back so I call again and he picked up and asked me to come in, I went in and gave a voluntary statement and signed it saying everything that happened. Now, everybody I know keeps telling me different things. "Get a lawyer and don't talk to the police", "Oh just talk to them you'll be fine". The detective said he is going to call me in a few days and that I should at least go back to the places I purchased items at and give them real money if they received a counterfeit 100 which I don't mind doing I already called Walmart and I can't go till tomorrow and the other places I will contact tomorrow (It's just been hectic).

What is your advice on what to do? The detective said there is a chance I may be charged with something but I won't be "locked up", should I believe him? Even if I wasn't "locked up" would I be able to fight the charges?

By the way, I do not have his phone number anymore as I used a phone app to contact him (I don't want them calling me back if anything goes wrong with the item). BUT I did tell him where we did the transaction and to look on the cameras to see him hoping into my car and coming out with a PS4. When the cop showed me the bills they looked really real. The back was like really clean thats the only thing that looked funny on them.

As long as you make full restitution, you should be hunky dory.
In the future, when dealing with the critters on CraigsList (or anywhere else for that matter), use one of those counterfeit detection pens before accepting the money and giving up the goods.
You can buy those things everywhere junk merchandise is sold, LOL

No worries, you're welcome.

A couple final comments on counterfeit currency.
If you unknowingly pass counterfeit currency, you're not going to be prosecuted.
Counterfeit laws were developed to thwart people from printing and then passing counterfeit money.
Those who manufacture counterfeit currency are in that small minority of criminals who directly affect the federal government.
Currency simply passes from hand to hand, and as long as no one inquires, it just keeps moving around the country and the world.
The biggest sources of counterfeit money come from countries that are unfriendly with the USA.
At one time, North Korea was believe to be the biggest purveyor of "genuine counterfeit" currency. LOL
It is also said that the Russians, the Iranians, and Cuba are also engaged in the manufacture of counterfeit US currency, specifically fifty dollar and one hundred dollar bills.

Say I were to unwittingly receive a fake Ben Franklin from a local mega store.
I passed it (unknowingly) at a restaurant.
I have committed no crime, but if it is discovered I passed the fake bill, I'd be out the money (just like you).
If I contacted the US Secret Service and reported the matter, they'd take the fake bill, but I'd be one Ben Franklin poorer.
That's why people are reluctant to report it, and simply try to get rid of fake bills.
The government says if they reimbursed people, they could also be giving free money to those who manufacture fake money.
Yeah, the old catch 22, or Hobson's choice.

I wish you well, and next time, use one of those pens.

Also, don't meet any of those Scammers List critters unless its in a vey public, well lit place, aka Starbucks comes to mind.
Be careful, there are many dangerous people on this planet.

Its sad to see you out of a gaming box and five hundred bucks!!!

Thank you for your help again, really eased my anxiety on this situation. I already went back to Walmart and paid them and we laughed about it. I contacted other stores I shopped at but they said they didn't receive any or know if they have. Maybe just one was fake? (I just doubt one was fake they were all old hundreds). I haven't heard anything else from the police so I guess I just wait.

I think the storm decided to pass you by when it recognized that you were simply another innocent citizen scammed by a CraigsList critter.
Good luck with your studies, and make sure you graduate.
