Hello,

I was caught stealing alcohol in washington state at a (store). I'm 19 years old. The cops came and gave me a citation for theft in the 3rd degree, but was not arrested. This is my first ever offense. What should I expect/do to recieve the least possible charges? It was $129 worth of alcohol. The lost prevemtion lady told me that I can get a diversion somehow, but I am unaware of how to do that.

Go to court press not guilty and obtain the services of a lawyer. Due to your age there are other violations they could tack on. A lawyer will help you through it and minimize the damage.

OP - I removed the name of the store from your post for your protection. Agree with talking to a lawyer.

I am a retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. ACD or Diversion are plea options (where available) that work like guilty plea but do not show up as conviction on record. Therefore when asked about criminal convictions you can say no! Talk to your Attorney to see if this kind of program is available in your case. I would also look to see if you have a MIP also on this charge.
